Learning: and how we avoid it

Presented at PyCon AU, Sydney, on August 25, 2018.

Last year I was privileged to give one of four keynote addresses at PyCon AU in Sydney. I spoke about how we get better at our craft, and how we — all too effectively — sabotage ourselves from doing so.

It was the first conference talk I had given in two years. There had been so much going on in my life that, for my own health, I hadn’t submitted or spoken at conferences for some time.

Maybe because of that, what I had on my mind wasn’t programming. It was recovery. I was more interested in talking about getting my brain working again, then what I was working on.

This was the most introspective and personal talk I’ve given. I’m so glad I was given the opportunity.
